Carpenter Canyon Trail
Trail Name: Carpenter Canyon
Location: Trailhead off Hwy 160 via Carpenter Canyon Road, west side of the Spring Mountains outside Pahrump
Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced
Distance: Up to ~40 miles round trip to the summit viewpoint, depending on how far you push in
Est. Time: 2-4 hours
Overview:
Carpenter Canyon climbs the west side of the Spring Mountains straight out of the Pahrump Valley, transitioning from high desert scrub into pinyon-juniper and ponderosa forest as you gain elevation. The unimproved campground at the base is a popular staging area, and rigs with good clearance can push all the way to the summit for views stretching from Charleston Peak to Telescope Peak in Death Valley.
What to Know Before You Go:
– Double-track gets narrow and technical the higher you climb, loose rock, ruts, and washouts are common above the campground.
– Watch for wild horses and burros on the lower stretches, and deer higher up.
– Snow and ice can close the upper sections in winter; conditions change fast at elevation.
– Cell service is spotty to non-existent once you’re off Hwy 160.
– Nevada OHV tag required.
Nearby Stops:
The unimproved Carpenter Canyon campground at the base makes a good staging/lunch spot, and a few hiking trails branch off from there toward Mt. Charleston if anyone wants to stretch their legs.
